The distribution of sediments and other features on the bay floor can change over time because of the rapid currents associated with the changing tides. Notice the waves of sand shown in the collor image at left (the wavy lines).

Here is an image of the entire survey area.

On the image in your handout, draw a line surrounding each major feature listed below:

      1. Opening to the Pacific Ocean at the Golden Gate,
      2. shoreline along San Francisco,
      3. Alcatraz Island and Angel Island,
      4. the Bay Bridge,
      5. the field of sediment waves, which are migrating ridges of mud on the bay floor,
      6. the flat areas of the bay floor,
      7. the regions of the rocks that stick out of the bay floor,
      8. the site of the disposed dredged materials, and
      9. any other features that you can identify.
