Once the ship leaves the dock, work on a research vessel occurs around the clock – 24 hours a day. Oceanographic ships like the R/V MacArthur, cost between $10,000 and $20,000 a day to operate, not including scientific operations. Consequently, every minute is precious. It is a while yet before we leave the dock, so let’s take a little time to explore the ship.
